Haliburton County is an administrative area in central Ontario, covering around 4,071 square kilometres of the Canadian Shield, a geographic area defined by rocky lakes and vast forests. 

Haliburton County’s neighbors include Nipissing to the north, Hastings to the east and southeast, Peterborough to the south, and Muskoka and Kawartha Lakes to the west. Within Haliburton County, there are four municipalities:

Haliburton County History

The area of Haliburton County was originally known for its thriving lumber industry, from the middle of the 19th century through to the beginning of the 20th. Many of the original mills of this period were built along the waterways due to the ease of transport these afforded for logs harvested in the area.

The county was first organized in 1874, put together from parts of Victoria County, Peterborough County, and Nipissing District. The county was named after Thomas Chandler Haliburton, who was the first chairman of the Canadian Land and Emigration Company.
